Conquer the Clutter: 16 Ways to Make Way for God’s Presence

Our homes (or where we have to call home for now) should be a haven—a place where God’s peace dwells, where His presence is welcome, and where our hearts can find rest. However, clutter, both physical and spiritual, can get in the way. I’ve learned firsthand that when I intentionally clear out the junk, I can hear His voice more clearly and move through life with more grace.

In this post, I’ll share 15 simple but powerful ways we can declutter our homes to make more space for God’s presence. And yes, this goes beyond just organizing—it’s about creating holy ground, room by room.

1. Declutter New Age Objects and Decor

Let’s start with the spiritual stuff. Many of us have knowingly or unknowingly allowed objects into our homes that don’t align with our faith—crystals, incense, tarot cards, dreamcatchers, or symbols tied to other belief systems.

I hear a lot of stories of people holding onto “harmless decor” or sentimental gifts not realizing it carried spiritual influence. The outcome is often a shifted atmosphere once it’s been removed.

You shall have no other gods before Me. Exodus 20:3

Pray over your home as you declutter, asking the Holy Spirit to show you anything that shouldn’t be there.

2. Declutter Where You Sleep

Your bedroom should be a place of rest, not stress. But if it’s filled with piles of clothes, cluttered nightstands, and distractions, it becomes harder to wind down and even pray.

Make space for stillness—clean sheets, soft lighting, and maybe a journal or Bible on your nightstand.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

Keep a small basket beside your bed for items to put away each evening—it helps keep the space peaceful.

3. Declutter Where You Eat

Our dining area is where we nourish our bodies—but it can also be where we connect spiritually with others. Whether you’re eating alone or as a family, a clutter-free table invites conversation, gratitude, and presence.

It’s better to not consider your table as storage otherwise it will always need decluttering. Make a rule of not storing anything on your dining table (books, keys, pens, handbags etc), instead find intentional storage solutions for miscellaneous items.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Make space on your table for a candle, flowers, or other decor if it feels too plain.

4. Declutter Your Workspace

Whether you work from home, run a home based business, homeschool, or manage household tasks, a cluttered workspace can affect clarity, focus, and creativity.

For me, even organizing my pens and clearing paper piles makes a huge difference. God is not the author of confusion—and our spaces should reflect this.

Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:40

Start and end each workday with a quick 5-minute tidy-up and a short prayer over your task – I know it sounds like I’m over-spiritualizing things, however don’t knock it before you’ve consistently tried it.

5. Declutter Your Entryway and Exit

This is where we start and end our day. A chaotic entryway can feel overwhelming. A peaceful, functional one sets the tone for both leaving and returning home.

Consider adding a small bowl for keys, a hook for bags, and a verse on the wall. Now it feels like a reminder that God goes with us and welcomes us back.

The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. – Psalm 121:8

Keep a small basket or bench for shoes and coats to avoid visual clutter right at the door.

6. Declutter Your Car

Your car is an extension of your home, especially if you’re constantly on the go. Fast food wrappers, receipts, forgotten toys—they add up fast.

Add some worship music and a fresh scent, make your commute feel like a sanctuary.

Keep a mini trash bag in the car and do a weekly sweep. Consider keeping a Bible or devotional in your glove box.

7. Declutter Your Yard Space

Your outdoor space doesn’t have to be fancy—it just needs to be tended. A tidy front yard can be a testimony. A peaceful back patio can become your prayer spot.

Even pulling weeds can feel like a spiritual practice: out with the old, in with the fruitful.

They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will sorrow no more. Jeremiah 31:12

Add a bench or chair to a shaded area outside for quiet time with God.

8. Declutter Your Closets

Closets are where we tend to hide things. But even what’s unseen can weigh us down. If it’s full of things you haven’t worn, need, or that don’t reflect who God’s calling you to be—let it go.

Check out YouTube for different ways to organise your space and how to develop capsule wardrobes.

Donate items in good condition to a local ministry or shelter. It blesses others and frees you.

9. Declutter Your Bookshelves

What we read and keep on our shelves speaks to what we value. As I went through ours, I made space by removing books that no longer aligned with our faith and added more devotionals, books on finance and business and created a digital library of books to clear up the physical copies I had.

Create a “faith shelf” or reading nook just for spiritual growth books, devotionals, and journals.

10. Declutter Your Digital Devices

It might not be physical clutter, but digital clutter counts too—apps, notifications, contacts, photos, and media that consume our minds.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2

Unfollow accounts that don’t edify your spirit and set digital boundaries to protect your peace. Do phone wipes and backups every so often, give yourself a well needed reset.

11. Declutter Your Kitchen Counters

A clean kitchen invites joy in meal preparation. When the counters are clear, I’m more motivated to cook Pinterest worthy meals and invite others into that space.

Wipe down surfaces every evening and put away unused appliances or items that don’t belong.

12. Declutter Your Laundry Area

Even laundry can feel therapeutic when the space isn’t chaotic.

Keep only what you need in your laundry space—detergent and a basket.

13. Declutter “The Junk Drawer”

Yes, that one. We all have it. But even this small step can bring clarity. It’s symbolic of the small areas in our lives we’ve overlooked.

Set a timer for 15 minutes today and tackle just one drawer or cabinet at a time.

14. Declutter Sentimental Items (With Grace)

We hold onto a lot “just in case.” But even sentimental clutter can steal space and attention. Let go of things you no longer need while honoring the memory behind them.

Take a photo of sentimental items before releasing them. Keep the memory, not the mess.

15. Declutter Your Finances

Consolidate old bank accounts, scan and dispose of old receipts, get all your assets and liabilities together in once place by using a budget template.

16. Declutter with Prayer and Praise

Most importantly—make decluttering a worshipful experience. Turn on worship music. Invite the Holy Spirit into each space.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

Dedicate each room as you declutter it. Anoint it with oil, speak peace, and pray for God’s presence to fill it.

A House That Welcomes His Presence

Decluttering is more than tidying—it’s making space for God to move. When our homes are free of chaos, distractions, and unholy influences, they become sanctuaries. Places where God’s presence is welcomed, felt, and honored.

Start with one room, one drawer, one prayer at a time. You don’t have to do it perfectly, just intentionally.
