9 Benefits of Digital Detox: How to Unplug and Reconnect with God

I think we can agree we live In a world that never stops scrolling. If we’re not careful, our devices can become the loudest voices in our lives—drowning out the still, small voice of God.

In this post, I want to share how digital detoxes have helped us reconnect with God, and nine life-changing benefits we experienced that may inspire you to try one too.

A digital detox is a period of time when you intentionally step away from digital devices—phones, tablets, TVs, social media, and even video games. The goal isn’t punishment, but peace. It’s about breaking the constant need to check updates and making room to connect with what matters most: your relationship with God, your family, and yourself.

1. You Hear God’s Voice More Clearly

There’s something powerful about silence. When we turn down the world’s noise, we “turn up heaven’s frequency”.

One weekend, my husband and I did a full digital fast—no YouTube, no gaming, no social media. The quiet was a little jarring at first. But then came the clarity. God’s voice wasn’t competing anymore. Scripture came alive. Prayer felt richer.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me, John 10:27.

Use part of your detox time for intentional Bible reading and journaling—ask God a question and listen for His response.

2. It Guards Your Mental Health

Constant notifications, disturbing news cycles, and comparison on social media all chip away at our peace.

When I fasted from my devices, I could actually feel my anxiety decreasing. My thoughts slowed. I could breathe again. I even with much clarity took inventory of who and what I was following and removed where it felt necessary and replaced it with content that was edifying and  in line with my personal goals.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23

Replace your usual screen time with something life-giving—worship music, a walk, a quiet meal, your budget spreadsheet, or even reading our blog posts.

3. It Restores Perspective

Stepping away from digital influence helps us regain clarity. You begin to think for yourself again—forming opinions rooted in truth, not algorithms.

When I wasn’t being fed curated opinions on current events or lifestyle trends, I found myself reflecting on scripture more. I could actually weigh things biblically and prayerfully.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2

During your detox, write out your core values and goals. Do your digital habits align with them?

4. It Strengthens Relationships

The weekend we detoxed together was one of the most refreshing times in our marriage. With no screens in the way, we had deeper conversations, prayed together, laughed, and unknowingly extended the fast because we didn’t realize when it was over.

Sometimes, we don’t realize how much of our affection and attention we give to devices instead of our loved ones.

“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” – Romans 12:9

Plan a “no tech” family night with games, storytelling, or outdoor fun. Watch how the atmosphere shifts.

5. It Improves Sleep

After just one day off of my phone in the evening, I slept deeper and woke up unaided and refreshed. I often hear people say that the blue light from screens suppresses melatonin, and the constant mental stimulation keeps your mind racing long after you’ve logged off.

Although we need to get back on track, when we wind down with books or soft worship music instead, the difference is unmatched.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” – Psalm 4:8

Consider setting a “digital sunset” time—after that, no screens. Create a calming bedtime routine instead.

6. It Helps You Reset Your Priorities

Without the constant ping of social media, you get a clearer view of what actually matters. Suddenly, prayer, family, rest, purpose and life goals come back into focus.

During our detox, I realized how much time I was giving to content that added no real value to my life. God gently reminded me that I was feeding my soul with junk when He had living water for me.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33

During your detox, write down three priorities you want to realign. Pray over them and make a plan.

7. It Models Healthy Habits for Children

Whether we realize it or not, our children ARE watching how we engage with tech. If they constantly see us glued to a screen, they’ll think it’s normal—even necessary.

However when we model boundaries, they learn balance. We’re showing them that presence matters.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6

Involve kids in the detox—let them choose alternative fun like baking, board games, or outdoor adventures.

8. It Reawakens Creativity

Without the dopamine hit from constant scrolling, your brain actually begins to think again, imagine that. You get new ideas. You find joy in creating, reflecting, or simply being present.

That weekend, I found myself getting more fresh air, finding solutions for our finances and business that somehow weren’t there before, and feeling more inspired than I had in months.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” – Colossians 3:23

Keep a “tech-free” journal during your detox to capture insights, ideas, or things God is showing you.

9. It Builds Self-Control and Spiritual Discipline

A digital detox is like fasting—it teaches restraint and spiritual focus. And just like physical muscles, self-control strengthens with use.

Saying “no” to screen time becomes easier. Saying “yes” to God’s nudges becomes more natural. You start craving the eternal over the entertaining.

“Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.” – Proverbs 25:28

Pair your detox with a spiritual discipline like fasting, extended prayer, or serving others.

It’s Time to Unplug and Reconnect

A digital detox isn’t just a trendy health hack—it’s a spiritual reset. When we unplug from the world, we plug into heaven. And that changes everything.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be intentional. Whether it’s one weekend or one hour a day, make room for God again.
